Medical Background

Dr. Lagaay earned his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) in 2004 from Temple University and thereafter completed a three year post-graduate surgical foot and ankle residency at one of the nation's most prestigious programs, Kaiser Permanente’s San Francisco Bay Area Foot and Ankle Residency Program. This residency program included training in general orthopedics (total joint arthroplasty, sports medicine, trauma), general surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, internal medicine, infectious disease, pathology, radiology, and foot and ankle surgery.
Subsequently Dr. Lagaay became a certified Ponseti Clubfoot Provider after successfully completing a mentorship with the late renowned Ygnacio Ponseti, M.D. at the University of Iowa. In 2008 Dr. Lagaay was accepted by the AO Foundation Trauma Fellowship Program at the University Hospital Carl Gustav in Carus Dresden, Germany. Under the close tutelage of one of the premier foot and ankle trauma surgeons, Hans Zwipp, M.D. Dr. Lagaay graduated and became a podiatric faculty member of the AO Foundation.

Dr. Lagaay launched this practicing career with Kaiser Permanente, known famously for ranking as one of America's top leaders in healthcare services and non-profit care. At this organization he rose to achieve many titles, including serving as residency research director, assistant department chief, and as the co-director for the Northern California Clubfoot Center of Excellence. Simultaneously, Dr Lagaay became a peer review editor for the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery and instructor for both the American Academy for Foot and Ankle Osteosynthesis, and Samuel Merritt School of Podiatry.
While working at Kaiser Permanente, he had the privilege to serve as an expert witness for numerous medical malpractice cases. After 9 years Dr. Lagaay transitioned to private practice, where his practice included patients with workers' compensation claims and personal injury.

Legal Experience

After having served as an expert witness for several medical malpractice cases, Dr. Lagaay’s interest in law was peaked. In 2016 Dr Lagaay enrolled at John F. Kennedy University School of Law as a part-time evening law student while still running his own practice. While in law school, Dr. Lagaay interned with two plaintiff personal injury firms (Gwilliam, Ivary, Chiosso, Cavalli & Brewer, and Arias, Sanguinetti Wang & Torrijos LLP).
Collectively, these firms advanced his experience with discovery, both California and Federal civil procedure, creating medical timelines, drafting memorandums of points and authorities specifically pertaining to the medical evidence, drafting demand and settlement letters, and deposition preparation. In 2020 Dr. Lagaay graduated and accepted a clerkship position with another personal injury firm, Law Offices of Larry Buckley.

After recently sitting for the California Bar exam, Dr. Lagaay has enrolled in ministry school with his spouse. Dr. Lagaay has a strong conviction to help others. For many years he did so in the medical field. Now he is eager to leverage his medical knowledge and experience for those in need of legal help. Dr. Lagaay’s combined medical and legal education position him to be a valuable asset for any legal team that is seeking to leverage the probative value of the medical evidence.
